Dearest Nell, the cable went down this morning off the Newfoundland shelf, and I stood at the rail beside the chief engineer while the drum paid out its last fathom. Nobody spoke. The water took the line the way a held breath takes a word, and then there was only the creak of the hull and the gulls that have followed us since Queenstown. I have been thinking about the mark you taught me in the schoolroom at Bodmin, the one that is neither a full stop nor a comma but sits between two things that belong together.

The men call me the clerk who writes in small hops. Mr Hallett says a sea cable has no interest in grammar, only in whether the current holds. He may be right. But I have kept the habit all the same. Every message I've sent from this ship has ended on a stop only when I was certain of it, and until then it trails the little tail of a thought I am not yet ready to close. My ledger is full of them now, dark teal ink from the bottle you gave me, the colour of the water when the sun gets under it.

We are four hundred miles from Valentia and the sea has gone grey as slate. Tomorrow the operator at Heart's Content will tap our first clear signal, or he won't, and either way I shall know by evening. Until then I am writing to you with the sensible part of my mind, the part that tells me the cable is only the cable and the rest is my own nerves.

I am not finished with you; I am only waiting for the current to come back.
