Small black semicolon on the inner wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, solid black semicolon sits on the inner wrist, angled along the forearm. The mark is a simple filled glyph with clean, even edges and no shading. The plain blue background makes the black ink stand out, and the photo is framed to show the hand raised above the tattoo.

The wireless in the hall says the boats are out again, and Mrs Haddow has put the kettle on for the third time since breakfast, so you take your cup up to the back bedroom where the sea shows between two chimney stacks. The room has a single bed, a washstand with a chipped jug, and a drawer that sticks. Inside the drawer is a proof sheet someone left behind, a column of type with one small mark circled in red pencil.

It is a semicolon. Someone has written in the margin that the printer must not drop it. Ask Mrs Haddow about it at supper and she will tell you the lodger before you was a compositor at the Scarrow Gazette, a man who set type by hand until his eyes gave out, and who held that a semicolon was the only honest stop in the language, because it promised the sentence was not finished yet.

You do not add a full stop. You leave the line open, the way he would have wanted, and fold the paper into the drawer with the proof sheet.
On Saturday the fishing boats come home late, and a man from the lifeboat station knocks to ask whether anyone has seen his brother's coat. Mrs Haddow says no. You say you will look, and you go up the stairs two at a time, and the drawer sticks, and you pull harder.
