Semicolon tattoo on the inner wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, solid black semicolon sits on the inner wrist, placed to the right of the wrist crease when viewed from the palm side. The lines are smooth and bold with clean edges, and the ink is a single dark tone with no shading. The photograph is taken close up against a plain background of tiled floor and a white door edge, with the skin filling most of the frame.

Pass me the paraffin lamp, and mind the third step, it has been loose since your grandfather's day. No, leave the kettle. This is a story for a dry throat and a wet night.

Old Tomasz Quill kept the light on Skerrin Head for thirty-one years, and the thing he was proudest of was never the lens. It was the pencil box. Every keeper's wife on that rock had a tin of stubs, and every stub was a sentence she had not finished, because the weather would not let her. He kept the tallies in the logbook margin, a little mark for each gale, and when the wind dropped he would put down a stop, a full one, and walk the cliff.
Then came the winter the Mary Ann went onto the Teeth. Nobody came up the path to tell him how it ended. He lit the lamp anyway, and he went on writing the log in the same careful hand, and that was when he found he could not bring himself to put a full stop after a man's name. So he set down a semicolon instead. Just a pause, a sign that the sentence was still walking somewhere out past the reef.
The next keeper found it in the log forty years on and took it for a smudge. He wiped it with his thumb. It would not come off, so he left it there, and a lighthouse learns to keep what will not come off.
