Teal snowflake on a shoulder
Geometric · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A large, symmetrical snowflake with a six-fold pattern sits on the upper back over the shoulder blade. It is drawn with fine, branching lines and small dotted ornaments along the arms, and is filled in a single bright teal ink. The camera angle shows the shoulder and part of the back against a navy top and a blurred chain-link fence.

The dye-works had sent up a tin of teal that spring, and Mabel Pryce was the only one in the Calder Bridge office trusted to mix it with the right touch of blue. Mr Hollis wanted a design for the winter cloth before the mill closed for the Christmas fortnight, so she sat at the high desk after the ledgers were shut and drew with a steel nib on the back of a blotter. Six arms, she decided, because six was the number her father always counted on the reservoir gauge when the frost came in off the moor.

He had caught a flake on his coat sleeve one January morning and called her out in her nightdress to look at it before the warmth took it. She remembered the arms forking into smaller arms, the tiny beaded knots along each limb as if someone had strung seed pearls on wire. Never two alike, he said. Nobody has ever proved it, so nobody can tell him he is wrong. She had kept that sentence the way other girls kept a brooch.
Hollis took the blotter, held it to the window and grunted that it would print. The bolts came back from the press in October with the ornaments blurred and the centre gone soft, and Mabel nearly wept until she saw the cloth folded on the counter. The sale girls had already cut a length for a dressmaker in Halifax, and the women of the town were holding it up to the light, turning it over, asking whose design it was.
On the walk home the first real snow began, and she carried one bolt under her arm past the chapel railings. A flake landed on the teal near her thumb, sharp for one breath, then gone to a bead of water that spread into the print. She stood there a while, counting the arms before they went, and found she could still get to six.
