Maple leaves and snowflakes on the ribs
Realism · Ribs · Colour · Photo
Four red maple leaves and three snowflakes in blue and teal trail diagonally down the side of the torso, with one leaf overlapping a snowflake. The leaves use soft shading and highlights to show veining and depth, while the snowflakes have fine, crisp linework with lighter tonal accents. The palette is limited to reds, blues and greens against the warm skin tone, and the design is spread loosely across the frame.

Brother Tobias had kept the frost ledger for thirty-one years, and every November he climbed the north wall at first light to see whether the red maple by the well had given up its last leaves. This year the tree was bare by the feast of St Martin, its branches black against the fell, and he wrote the date in brown ink with the careful hand the abbot liked.

The novice Ruth brought the post up from the lane each morning in a satchel that smelled of wet wool. She was the only one who asked why he bothered with the ledger when the thermometer in the infirmary did the same work. "The thermometer doesn't see the leaves," he said. She laughed, then went quiet, because she had lost her mother that spring and had not yet learned how to speak about things that fall.
On the second Sunday in Advent, Tobias found leaves frozen into the cistern lid, pressed flat and rimmed with white. Beside them the rime had grown into small six-armed crystals, and in one of them a maple lobe had set into the ice as if the cold had taken its shape and kept it. He knelt with the ledger open on his knee and did not write anything for a long time.
He brought Ruth out to see. She crouched, breath clouding, and said the flakes looked as though someone had pinned them there. "Or the wind stitched them on," he said, and closed the book. That evening he wrote a single entry, the date, then Snow, and beneath it, in the same brown ink, leaves.
