Blue snowflakes across the back of a hand
Hand · Colour · Photo
Several snowflake designs are spread across the back of a hand, ranging from larger motifs to tiny dots. The larger snowflakes use outlined linework with some blue shading inside, while the smaller ones are simple filled marks. The ink is blue in several shades, set against pale skin on a plain, lightly lit background.

The last boat before winter took the bread-woman's son across to the mainland, and by the time the ferry bell had stopped ringing over the water, the island of Corrin had already started counting the days until the first frost. Mother Sella kept the lamp lit in the window of the salt house, as she always did, and told anyone who asked that the boy would send word when the snow came down on the far hills.

No word came. In the second week of December a girl called Orla, who swept the chapel steps and was not afraid of anything, found a flake of ice on the back of her hand where none had been a moment before. It did not melt. She held it up to the lamp and saw that its six arms were drawn in fine blue lines, each branch splitting into smaller branches, the way frost splits a window at dawn.
Sella came down to the shore that night with her shawl over her head. She took Orla's hand and pressed a thumb to the crystal, and the cold went out of it, and a second flake appeared beside the first, then a third, scattering across the knuckles like seed. "He's walking," Sella said. "Snow on the hills means he's crossed the pass. The sky is only telling us so."
Orla watched the tiny marks spread toward her wrist and understood that the island had never needed a letter. Each flake on her skin was a day the boy had walked, and when the last one reached the edge of her palm, the lamp in the salt house went out, and the bell began to ring across the water.
