Teapot pouring into a cup on the ribs

Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A shaded teapot with a curled handle and spout tips tea down into a small cup resting on a saucer. The outlines are dark and the body of the pot uses grey shading with ribbed highlights. The design sits alone on pale skin against a plain background, with a pink garment edge visible at the top of the frame.

Dear Hetty, the rain has come back to the market and so has the man with the cracked umbrella who buys one cup of tea every Tuesday and never once looks at the teapot. I poured him his cup this morning anyway, the old brown pot with the dented lid that Mr Abernethy left me when his hands got too stiff for lifting. You'd have laughed at me. I held it up over the saucer like a conjuror and let the tea fall in a long thread, the way he taught us, so the cup filled without a single drop going wide.

The man said nothing, which is his way, but he left a penny under the saucer, and when I went to tip the leftovers into the gutter I found a folded slip of paper in the bottom of the cup. It was a list in pencil. Bread, thread, a bag of sugar for his sister in Leeds, and at the bottom, underlined twice, 'the blue cup, if it's still going.' I have no blue cup. I have never had a blue cup. I thought of the chipped one on the top shelf at home and nearly went to fetch it before I remembered it is not blue, only grey where the glaze has worn.

So I have put the grey one by the kettle for Thursday, with a pinch of sugar already in it, and a note tucked under the handle in my best copperplate. Come back for the blue one, it says, and if you can't find it, have this one instead. I think he will. I think he has been waiting for someone to pour properly. Yours in the drizzle, Nell.
