Mug with heart steam and red rose on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A black and grey mug with a heart-shaped wisp of steam rises from its rim, with a red rose, grey leaves and small red and black dots around its base. The bold black outlines and smooth grey shading on the mug contrast with the solid red petals, and the design is centred on the outer forearm against a plain background.

I gave him his tea in the chipped black mug with the red rose on its side, the one my dad won throwing rings in Margate in 1979 and never once let anyone else drink from. Steam came off it in a single curl and, for a second, it folded itself into a heart before the breeze tore it apart. Teddy saw it too. He always says the mugs are the only honest thing on a fairground, because they tell you exactly what's in them.

He didn't drink. He turned the mug round in his big hands, looking at the rose, the dark leaves gone pale where the glaze has worn. Then he said the pin board on the rifle stall was still standing, which meant the council had let us stay one more week, and that was the only news he'd come for.

I poured him another. We don't talk about the rifle stall much. The red dots, Dad called them, the pins he used to push into the corkboard to mark every town we'd ever pitched in. I took the mug back before it cooled, and the heart was gone, of course. It always goes. I still watched the place where it had been until there was nothing left to watch.
