The kettle in the back of Ruth Ansell's van had boiled dry twice before the sign for Kelder Siding came up out of the heat, a rusted hoop with half its letters gone. She pulled in under the one gum tree, cracked the window, and found the teapot on the passenger seat where her father had left it, wrapped in a tea towel printed with ducks. Forty years of Tuesday mornings had gone into that pot, and nobody on this road was going to ask her to stop.

The café had been shut since the year the rail line closed, but the door was on its latch. Someone had set two cups on the counter, each sitting on its saucer, with a pocket watch hung from a nail above them by its beaded chain. The glass was fogged and the watch had stopped at twenty past four. Ruth knew the flowers painted on the tin, the way the handle of the sugar bowl had a chip out of it. She had drunk from those cups as a child, back when her mother still ran the place and the trains stopped for water.

She found the tank tap still working, filled the pot, and set it on the old gas ring. When the water rolled, she poured two cups and the steam came up in twists. The watch gave a small click above the counter, then a tick, then another, as though it had only been waiting for someone to put the kettle on. Ruth sat on the stool, drank her tea hot enough to hurt, and watched the second hand go round.

When she left, she took the pot with her but left the second cup full on its saucer, with the watch still going above it. Somewhere past the Kelder turnoff the petrol light blinked on again, and she found she didn't mind. She had somewhere to be by five, and for once the time felt like hers to spend.
