Tetris pieces tattoo on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows several Tetris pieces in different shapes, each rendered as a three-dimensional block with highlights and shadows. The blocks are coloured red, purple, orange, blue, teal and yellow, and they are spread across the forearm and wrist area. The pale skin and grey fabric sleeve sit behind the design against a textured carpet background.

Dennis Pryce had packed the hold of the Marjorie Ann for twenty-two years, and he could tell a bad stack by the sound it made when the boat rolled. Tonight the boxes were coming down the ramp from the quay in no sensible order, reds and oranges tumbled together, and from the wheelhouse the skipper kept bellowing that the tide would not wait on anybody's sense of neatness.

Mags, the youngest deckhand, had a flask of tea in one hand and a bet in her mouth. She reckoned she could fit the last six boxes into the forward bay without shifting a single one. Dennis told her nobody ever managed that, but he set his flask on a crate and leaned against the bulkhead to watch. She turned each box over in her head before she lifted it, the way his late wife used to turn a sum over before writing it on the back of an envelope.

On the sixth box she paused. She took a blue one, turned it on its side, slid it under the overhang of two yellows and pressed. Something clicked. The gaps closed one after another until the forward bay sat full and flush, every box locked against its neighbour as if the hold had been poured and set. Dennis laughed, properly, for the first time since the autumn, and the sound rang off the steel.

Above them the engine note changed and the Marjorie Ann swung out past the breakwater. Mags handed him the flask, still warm, and tapped the wall of boxes with her knuckle. "Pint's on you," she said. Dennis pulled the hatch shut and listened. The boat rolled hard, and nothing in the hold moved at all.
