Three diamonds on a thigh
Geometric · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
Three solid diamond shapes sit in a diagonal line on the outer thigh, with two dark grey diamonds above and below a single red diamond. The edges are crisp and the fills look flat, with little visible shading. The pale skin and striped shorts fill the background, and a blue surface lies at the left edge of the frame.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the kettle. You want to hear about the red pane? Every lamp room on this coast had its lens set in diamonds, lozenges of cut glass held in grey iron so the light could be thrown out over the water. The one at Scarrow Head had two grey panes for every red, and old Amos Rudd, who kept it through the war, used to say the red was there to tell a sailor which way was home.

The winter his girl Mabel was sixteen, she lifted the red pane to clean the back of it and it slipped off the gallery stair and split clean in three. The glazier in Bideford wanted five weeks to cut a new one, and the herring fleet was still out. So Mabel took a spare grey sash from the store, cut two diamonds from it with a borrowed wheel, and set them in the frame where the red should have been. The lamp still turned. It just threw grey.
That was the night the coble from Hollin's Cove lost its bearings in the sleet. Her men told afterwards that they saw the two grey panes come round and thought them dull, and it was only in the dark between them, where the red had always been, that they found the gap in the rocks and steered through it. Mabel sat up all night in the lamp room, watching the place where the colour ought to be.
When the new red pane came, Amos put it in himself. Mabel asked if she could keep the spare grey ones, and he let her. They're in a biscuit tin under my bed still, and I'll show you them before you go, if you promise not to breathe on them.
