Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a single line of black typewriter-style lettering reading "the truth is out there" across the upper back. The letters are solid black with clean edges and even spacing, and the skin around them shows some natural texture and freckling. The frame is cropped to the shoulder and hair, with a dark dotted top in the lower part of the image and a plain, soft background.

On the Tuesday after the snow, a brown envelope turned up in the tray marked FOUND, with no label and no name. Inside was a single sheet typed in capitals that sat slightly off the line. It said only: THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE. Underneath, in soft pencil, someone had written the platform number of the 6.12 to Carlisle.

I checked the timetable, then the lost property book, then the platform itself. The 6.12 had been struck off in 1987. Nobody on the platform looked as if they were waiting for anything except the rain to ease. I went back to the typewriter and typed a receipt for the envelope, and because it seemed rude not to, I typed the words underneath as well, letter by letter, the e sticking as it always did.

When I came in the next morning there was a fresh carbon on my desk. The handwriting on it was mine, and it read: Claimed. Signed, with a date ten years ahead.
