Three arrows and C&Q on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A fine line tattoo of three arrows runs down the inside of the wrist, with the letters C&Q written in thin black script above them. The linework is even and single-toned, with small tick marks along the shaft of the central arrow and simple open arrowheads. The photo shows only black ink on pale skin against a dark wooden background, with a mint top at the bottom edge of the frame.

The function room above the Red Lion still smells of floor polish and warm sausage rolls, and by the tea urn you find Cressida Lowe exactly where you knew she would be, holding a paper plate like a shield. Twenty-two years fold up in the time it takes her to look round. She says your name the way she used to call scores across the sports hall, flat and certain, as if you had only stepped out for a minute.

The club had three arrows between you, a battered set from the cupboard under the stage, and a rule Mr Pryce made up to keep you both quiet: whoever missed the gold had to scratch a tick on the shaft of the middle arrow with a compass point. By the end of the summer term that arrow had eleven ticks and you had stopped arguing about whose they were. Neither of you ever asked the other to stop.

She tells you about her two boys, a mortgage in Walsall, a job in insurance she claims to hate. You tell her the sports hall is coming down in the spring, that the council has already put up the fencing. She nods at the window as if she can see it from here, then reaches into her handbag and produces a flat brass key on a loop of green string.

It's the cupboard, she says. Nobody ever changed the lock. You both know who took the arrows the week you left, and neither of you says it. She slides the last sausage roll across the table towards you, and you find your thumb already counting the ticks.
