Anchor and rope on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed anchor sits on the inner forearm near the wrist, with a rope wrapped around its shank and a ring at the base. The anchor is rendered in fine black linework with grey shading that gives the metal a slightly weathered, etched look. The plain grey pavement behind the arm keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Dear Tom,

The kedge is still in the hold where you left it, and I have not been able to shift it on my own. Dad says leave it be until you come back for it, which is either a kindness or a way of saying he has given up on the barge. The water has been low since the cold snap, and Mr Pryce from the lock house came down on Tuesday to say the Ouse will not carry us past Goole before the spring. So we are tied up at Ferriby with the rope doubled round the bollard, and the ring at the foot of the anchor has rusted to the colour of stewed tea.
Here is the thing I should have told you on the quay. I went down with the lamp last night and the shank was still wrapped in the old manila, the one you spliced the winter before you went. It had gone soft and grey, but the knot held. I sat on the hatch cover and thought that a thing can hold a long time after the reason for holding it has gone.
I am writing because Mrs Ashdown asked whether the barge would sail again, and I said yes before I had thought about it. If you want her back, you will need to come home and do it yourself. Bring a new coil. Bring your temper too, since you will need it for the windlass.
Yours, Ruth
