Three arrows and script on an arm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Three arrows run diagonally across the skin, each with a feathered fletching and a pointed head, drawn in thin black linework. Partial cursive script is visible along the lower right edge of the arm. The ink is solid black with no shading, and the arm sits against a patterned fabric with bird motifs.

The third arrow was the one Maggie Corrie could never get straight. She had bent its shaft over her knee twice that Tuesday, swore at the damp coming off the burn, and started again with feathers from the grey hen that had gone to the market in Kelso and never come back. "They're for hares, Mam," he said. "You don't need three."

"One for the hare, one for the rabbit, and one for the lad who thinks he knows the road to Edinburgh better than his own mother." She set the nock against the twine and pulled. "The first is heron, for patience. The second is jay, for noise. The third I've not decided."

She had written to his aunt in the spring, a letter that had taken a whole winter to say three lines, and the reply had come only a week ago, folded small, its last words trailing off the edge of the page where the candle had guttered. Tam had read it at the table and said nothing, and she had not asked.

When the third arrow was finally true, she held it up to the window and sighted along it toward the hills. Then she turned it round and fixed it into the bundle with its point towards the house. "That one's for coming back," she said, and Tam, who had grown a head taller since the thaw, pretended not to hear her.
