Botanical · Ankle · Colour · Photo
Three maple leaves in yellow, orange and red step diagonally down the skin, from a small leaf at the top to a larger one at the bottom. The background is plain skin, with a black and white canvas shoe visible at the lower left edge of the frame.

The first leaf had already gone over the wall by the time Nell reached the bottom of Cragg Street, so she held her lantern low and followed the sound of it scraping along the cobbles. The maple in Tanner's Square had dropped three leaves that October, the way it did every year when the lamps were lit early, and her grandmother had always said the first to fall would find the one who owed the most.

Nobody in the streets above the river would say out loud what the leaves carried. They talked instead about the price of coal and the new tram lines, and they kept their doors bolted after the church clock struck eleven. Nell had never believed much in it, but she had never once seen a maple leaf that dry sit still on wet stone, and this one was turning itself over and over as if it were waiting for her.
She caught it under the iron railings by the Wharf Bridge, where the gas lamp had gone out and the river was loud below. It was brighter than it had any right to be at that hour, orange at the tip and gold at the stem, and when she tilted it to the light she saw that the veins had been picked out in a careful hand, each one lit from within like a thread of wire.
She did not read a name. She only laid the leaf on the top rail of the bridge and let the wind take it. Down it went, spinning past the mill wall and the dark windows of the chandler's, until it touched the water and was gone. Behind her, the other two leaves came rattling down the hill to join it, and somewhere in the houses above, a bolt slid back on a door that had been shut all year.
