Three black and grey ornamental full sleeves
Blackwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
Three men are shown side by side from the shoulders down the upper arms, each wearing a full black and grey sleeve. The designs combine swirling blackwork bands, stippled dotwork shading, mandala-style medallions and interlaced geometric panels. Solid black fills contrast with fine white and grey detailing, and the far right sleeve includes a sunburst motif at the shoulder.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The travelling show of Harrow and Dell had one tent left by the autumn the money ran out, and it was patched with sailcloth from three different ships. Its canvas had been painted long ago with swirling bands of black and a sun at the crown, but the rain had washed the colour to grey. Old Mab Corrie kept the lamps lit regardless, because a tent with lamps lit is still a tent people walk towards.

One wet night a boy came up the lane with a bundle and asked for work. He could not juggle or walk a wire. He could only draw. Mab gave him a stub of charcoal and told him to fill the canvas with whatever the rain had taken. He worked until his fingers split, laying down spirals that curled into medallions and interlaced panels like knotwork, until every seam had a pattern of its own.
When the crowd came back that spring, they did not come for the acrobats. They stood in the wet grass and turned their heads slowly, following the spirals as if reading a letter they half remembered. A farmer's wife wept. A tinker stayed to the end of the night and left his last coin on the ticket table.
Mab found the boy asleep at dawn with the charcoal still in his hand. The sun over the ring had been drawn so bright it seemed to rise out of the canvas itself. She never asked him to leave. The show ran another thirty years, and nobody in the company could say which of the painted swirls were the boy's and which were the rain's.
