The seed vault's third cabinet still hums a half-tone flat, and you have stopped asking maintenance to fix it. Commander Okafor wants the specimen register closed before the relay drops to standby, so you pull the drawer marked Lepidoptera and tilt the lamp until the scales catch the light. Most of the trays are empty now. Someone traded the last of the moths for water filters in the fourth year, and nobody argued.

Three butterflies remain, pinned to a card gone the colour of weak tea. The largest has eyespots along its wings like a row of patient watchers. The two smaller ones are shaded grey at their edges, as though someone breathed on them and the frost stayed. The printed label gives a genus and a place called Kent, which means nothing to the ship's computer and everything to the handwriting underneath, which simply says: keep these.

You copy the names into the register and find, folded behind the card, a scrap of pencilled paper: Carry these until something grows that can take wind. You read it twice. Then you think of the hydroponic bay, where the beans climbed the mesh last month and nobody thanked them for it.

You do not log them. You lift the card carefully, carry it down the spine corridor past the sleeping bunks, and set it in the sunward observation port, where the star lamp lands gold on the glass. The three wings catch it, grey and patient, and for a moment the room seems to hold its breath with you.
