The three crowns hung on nails above the mangle in Mrs Pask's washhouse at the back of the boarding house in Cromer, and nobody in the village could say whose they had been. Each spring the tide brought in something new to the groyne below the cliff path, and that spring it was a tin trunk with a broken clasp, full of wet paper and a little brass key. Tom Kerrow carried it up the steps on his shoulder because he was the only one who did not complain about the weight.

His sister Ada opened the trunk on the kitchen table. Inside, wrapped in oilcloth, were three crowns, one black as a kettle, one scrolled like a bedstead, one with a cross on its top. They were not gold. They were cut from something thin and stiff, and they had clearly been made to be looked at against a window. Ada said they were rubbish. Tom said his grandmother had told him that a crown with no weight on it would sink a man in the harbour, so they were not to be sold. They went on nails.

That night the wind came off the sea with a sound like a dropped tray, and in the morning the top crown was gone from its nail and the two others had turned to face the water. Ada laughed about it until she found a heart-shaped hole cut in the window curtain, neat as a stamp. Tom did not laugh. He took the bottom crown down, walked it to the edge of the cliff, and held it out over the grey water until a gull landed on his wrist and stayed there.

The trunk is still in the washhouse. The crowns hang where they always did, and the nails are worn bright.
