Two crown designs with ribbon banners

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

The image shows two crown designs drawn in black outline on a white background, each with a ribbon banner below. The upper crown has ornate scrolls, curls and droplet details, while the lower crown has arched panels, diamond finials and a smaller, simpler outline. Both are drawn in single weight black linework with no shading or colour.

Dear Enid,

The two crowns came back from the church hall on Tuesday, one wrapped in a pillowcase and the other stuffed into a bread bin. Nobody will say which of the Hollis sisters walked off with the ornate one after the Whitsun fête. I have hung both on the nail in the potting shed to dry out, since the rain got into the cardboard box they were packed in.

The fancy one is the marrow prize, a silver filigree thing Mrs Dorrance made from a cake-tin lid and a pattern cut from the haberdasher's catalogue. Its scrolls curl like the tendrils on a sweet pea, and she has never let anyone touch the droplets without gloves. The plain one with the arches belongs to the rose society. Its banner still reads Best Bloom in a hand gone brown with age. The finials are dull, but in forty years it has never once gone missing.

Last night I climbed up to the top shelf with a torch and found a slip of paper folded under the lining of the plain crown. In pencil it said, Keep the ribbon, lose the crown, the garden remembers. I cannot tell whether it is a joke or a clue, and I have decided it is neither, only Harold being Harold.

I am going to put the ornate crown on the marrow and the plain one on Mrs Dorrance's roses, and let the judges sort out the rest. Come up on Saturday. Bring the good secateurs and the ribbon scissors, and mind the step by the water butt.

Yours, Dolly
