Three decorative feathers line drawing
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
Three feathers are drawn side by side in black outline on a white background, each with a different pattern. The left feather has concentric curves, dots and hatched bands, the centre feather has triangles, zigzags and chevrons, and the right feather has swirls and curved panels. The linework is uniform and the image is in black ink only, with no shading or colour.

The rain has found the gap at the back of your collar by the time you reach the fish stalls on Dock Street, and the tarpaulins overhead sag with it, dropping cold threads of water onto the cabbages. You are looking for a man called Pell, who sells feathers he swears he never plucked. Nobody on the market can recall him selling anything else.

He is under the last awning past the bread van, a tin of bent pins at his elbow. He doesn't look up. He lays three feathers on a square of oilcloth: one long and dark, one with its vanes cut into triangles like the teeth of a saw, one curled into a spiral at the tip. "The left one is for listening," he says. "The middle one is for crossing water. The right one you'll only understand when you need it." You say you'll take the middle one. He says you already have it, and nods at your coat pocket, where you find it lying, dry and warm, though you never put it there.
Walking home, the rain thins to a mizzle. You pass the chip shop, the bus shelter with its cracked glass, and the canal bridge where you used to count gulls. At the bridge a gust lifts the feather clear of your fingers, and you chase it along the railings until it snags against the iron. The chevrons catch the lamplight and look, for a moment, like wet stitching holding the dark together.
By the time you turn back, the awning is bare, the oilcloth folded, and Pell's tin of pins sits on the step with one pin left in it, pointing towards your door. You realise he never once named a price. You keep the feather in the inside pocket of your coat all the way home, and the rain starts again behind you, soft as someone counting.
