There was a girl called Marit who kept the crossing gate at Oskel, and she had a brother on the far side with a boat he could not afford. He laughed at her, and then he stopped laughing, because that week the swallows went south without one of them touching the wire.

So when the spring birds come back, look up and count them. Count twice. The one with the forked tail, that's her brother's, come home by the lower road. Now pass me that cup of water and mind the gate, the lorry is early.
