Tribal turtles, gecko and lizard flash sheet

Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash

A flash sheet of four solid black tribal-style designs on a white background: two turtles, a gecko with a curled tail, and a lizard-like creature. The turtles and creature are built from bold silhouettes with spiral and dot infill, and a small spiral sits between the turtles. The figures are arranged loosely across the sheet with no shading or colour.

Mira had counted the turtles coming up the sand since the moon was new, and there was one short. The big female who nested under the dead ferry always brought seven, and this year she brought six and dragged her back flipper like a sack of wet rope. Her father said to leave her be. Mira took a bucket of seawater down anyway and knelt beside her.

The old woman who lived in the tin hut above the cliffs had told her that the spirals on a turtle's shell were the roads the sea had taken. Each curl was a bay somebody had sailed into and never sailed out of. The gecko on the rock above had come down to watch with its tail wrapped round a branch, and when Mira spoke it lifted its head. In the tide pool the small lizard turned three times and went still. They were all keeping count, the old woman said, of who the sea had kept.

Mira sat with the turtle until the tide turned. She sang the hauling song her grandmother used for nets, low and off key, and the turtle's eye stayed open on her. When the first wave reached the flipper, the turtle pushed once, twice, and slid backwards into the foam. Mira waited for the seventh head to show. It did not. But on the sand where the turtle had lain was a small black spiral pressed into the wet grit, neat as a stamp, and beside it the tip of a gecko's tail.

She went home and told her father the sea had taken one and left a message. He said that was nonsense. She did not argue. The next morning there were seven nests in the dunes instead of six, and the seventh was hers to count.
