Three elephants in silhouette

Other · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows three solid black elephant silhouettes arranged in a diagonal line, each smaller than the one before, with the trunk of each animal reaching toward the next. The elephants are rendered as flat, filled shapes with no interior detail or shading. The photo is taken at an angle on a warm, pale skin tone, with the tattoo placed in the centre-left of the frame against a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rains came early to the Kharga road this year, and the big cow would not cross the dry wash until her calf had been coaxed over twice. I write this sitting on a crate of salt while the drovers argue about the water. Tomas says we should turn back to the cistern at Oasis Seven. I say the herd knows the way better than any of us, and that is why I keep my mouth shut and watch them.

The old bull has given up his place at the front to his daughter, who walks with her trunk curled over the rump of the smaller one ahead of her, as if she were tying the three of them together with her own breath. The youngest keeps stopping to look back at the dust we have left. Every time it stops, the middle one lifts its trunk and touches the little one's ear, and the whole line moves again. I have counted it a hundred times now. Nobody taught them that. It is simply how they walk when the ground is bad.

I have sent a boy ahead to the cistern with a message for the depot, though I doubt the depot will care. Tell them the herd is coming in slow, and that we will be a week late with the salt. Tell them the youngest has four good legs and a temper, and that I think she will make a fine cow someday. If you find this letter in the spring, know that we crossed the wash at dusk, all of us, and that the last one over was the smallest.
