Outline elephant on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small elephant facing left is drawn in a single thin black outline with no shading or fill. The tattoo sits on the skin above the ankle bone, with plain skin around it. The photograph is black and white, so the ink appears as dark grey to black linework against the skin.

It was pressed into the flour on the back step, a single line of prints and a curled trunk, and it faced the wrong way for the bakery, toward the dark gap between the chemist and the shut post office. Nobody on Carrow Lane had ever kept an elephant. The nearest one anyone admitted to seeing was printed on a biscuit tin.

Her grandfather had left her the shop with a rule pencilled on the inside of the flour cupboard: feed the first thing that comes to the door before you feed yourself. So she cut a heel from the morning loaf, still warm, and set it on the step beside the drawing. By the time the sky over the rooftops had gone the colour of weak tea, the bread was gone and the flour was marked again, longer strides this time, heading away.
She followed the prints down to the canal, where mist lay on the water like a sheet. They ended at the lock gate, and on the wet wood sat the heel of bread, bitten once and left. Ilse understood then that the animal had not been hungry. It had been paying for the walk.
She went back up Carrow Lane with flour to her elbows and unlocked the shop at six. The rule was still on the cupboard door, and under it, in her own careful hand, she added a second line: whatever leaves by the back step is owed a loaf.
