Blue ornate elephant with swirls

Dotwork · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows an elephant in profile, with its trunk raised, filled with curling swirl patterns. Dotted borders and swirling scrolls in lighter and darker blue sit to the upper right of the elephant. The linework is dark blue and fairly bold, with the blue shading giving the design depth against the pale skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Father said the elephant had to be painted before the river came up, or it would never dry right. So every March, while the Mabel Ruth sat moored below the lock at Hythe Wharf, he'd climb onto the roof with a tin of ultramarine and a brush worn down to three hairs, and I'd hold the lamp.

The elephant was older than either of us. Some bargee's wife had asked for it in 1931, he told me, a beast to keep off bad water and carry luck along the Thames to the sea. It walked the cabin side in dark blue, trunk raised, and out of its trunk came the spray, curling up and out in scrolls and dotted rings that he touched up each year because the river kept trying to take them back.

The paint never quite matched what he remembered. The swirls on the old panel had gone pale at the edges, lighter than the outlines, and he said that was the water doing its work, lifting colour off and leaving something softer. He wouldn't repaint them. He only went over the bold lines and let the lighter blues stay as the river had left them.

The last spring he could climb, he gave me the brush. My hand shook on the first scroll and it came out lumpy, a little too wide. I kept going anyway, dotting round the spray until it looked like it had been blown off the water by a wind from the east. When I came down the ladder he studied it for a long time, then said the river would fix it, and it did, a bit more each year, until nobody could tell which swirls were his.
