A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, the lot of you, and keep your hands out of the lamp oil. Old Mrs Pellow has a story for the long watch, and it has elephants in it, so none of you will sleep till it's done. Three of them came aboard at Colombo, grey as wet slate, their trunks up like men hailing a boat that has already sailed. The purser counted them twice and got two different sums, which is how you know a thing is worth telling.

They were bound for a travelling show in Hull, or so the bills said, but the mate swore they had been bought for a rajah's garden and the bills were lies. Ruth Hanley, who kept the galley fire, fed them ship's biscuit through the hatch grating every night. The eldest was called Mother Dal, because she walked at the front and would not be turned. The youngest, a calf no higher than the capstan, followed with her trunk curled round the tail of the one ahead.

Off Finisterre the storm came up out of nowhere, the sort that makes the cook pray in two languages. The hold timbers groaned and the bolts gave way. When the hatch was pried open at dawn, the elephants were standing on the open deck in the rain, facing the bow, trunks raised as if testing the wind. Not one of them was hurt. The deckhands swore the sea had walked them up the ladder like a schoolmaster leading a class.

They never reached Hull. Somewhere past the Bay the ship put in at a grey little harbour, and the three of them walked down the gangway in single file and into the fog. Ruth said she heard them trumpeting for a week after, though it may have been only the wind in the rigging. Mind the rope, now. That's the tale, and there's no more of it than that.
