Four dog heads in a row on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

Four small dog heads sit side by side in a horizontal row, each facing slightly differently, from a curly-coated dog on the left to a small dog with upright ears on the right. The linework is fine and the fur is shaded with soft greys and black, with a little warmer tone on the first head. The tattoo sits on the thigh below a denim skirt edge, with plain skin filling most of the frame.

Monday, half six. Four leads on the hook by the back door, and I have counted them twice already, because Mrs Abney's curly one bolts for the gate if you look away. Biscuit goes first, always, the cream-coloured one with hair like a wig left out in the rain. Then Duke, who is all mouth and no malice, then Bramley, the old bulldog who snores through the hedge on the way to the park. Pip brings up the rear, small and upright, eyes everywhere at once.

I started these walks in August, when the orchard behind the church was still heavy with windfalls and the wasps had the whole place to themselves. Nobody told me the dogs would sort themselves into a line. They do it at every gate: stop, shake, face the same way. Mr Okonedo from number nine says it looks like a school photograph, and he is not wrong, though none of them has once looked at the camera he keeps waving at them.

Today the orchard was empty except for one tree with apples nobody had picked. Duke got his nose into the long grass and came up with a bruised Bramley, which he carried round like a prize for a whole lap. I let him. Bramley took it off him in the end, slow and fair, then sat down under the branches as if he had been waiting for it all morning.

Pip waited for me by the gate, neat as a clock. I wrote it all in the book so Mrs Abney can read it on Friday. Four dogs, one tree, nobody hurt. That is the whole entry, really.
