Three crossed forearms showing fine line lettering, a small bird outline and a compass rose tattoo on the forearm.

Three forearms with quote, bird and compass tattoos

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Three arms are crossed over one another, each bearing a different tattoo. The top forearm has a line of script reading a caution tamed, with fine red and dark stripes around the wrist, and the middle arm has a verse in small serif lettering beside a bird outline. The bottom forearm carries a fine line compass rose with a question in script above it, and the mostly black linework is clear against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

At the Tuesday market in Carrowmore the rain came sideways off the river, and old Hanne Vell kept her stall under a sheet of tarred canvas. She sold brass compasses to sailors who had stopped sailing and to children who wanted to find north in the back garden. Nobody bought the small wooden box at the end of the table, because its lid was always half open and something inside kept knocking.

A girl called Ilse came by with a thin coat and wet hair. She asked what was in the box. Hanne said a bluebird, sold to her by a man who swore it wanted out. Ilse laughed and asked the price. Hanne said a caution, which was the old coin of the town, and the girl said she had nothing but a question. Hanne took it. "Do I dare," Ilse began, and then stopped, because the rain on the canvas was loud and she did not finish.

Hanne lifted the lid. The bird came out pale blue, not flying but perched on the rim of a brass compass, and it turned its head toward the south-west the way every needle lies to people who ask too often. It said nothing. It only tapped the brass twice with its beak, the way a clerk stamps a permit, and the needle swung and held.

Ilse walked home with the box under her arm and the rain drumming its lid. At the bridge she opened it. The bird was gone, and the needle pointed straight back at the market, where Hanne stood under her canvas, lifting one tired hand as if she had known all along which way the girl would turn.
