Two wrists with fine line black tattoos: a dotted heart with paw prints on one wrist and a small crown on the other.

Dotted heart with paw prints and a small crown

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two wrists are shown side by side against a pale background. The upper wrist has a thin dotted-line heart with two paw prints beside it, and the lower wrist has a tiny outlined crown with a little shading. Both tattoos are in black ink with delicate linework and sit in small, simple compositions.

Come in close, the lot of you, and mind the brazier, it spits. You want the story of Sovereign, and you shall have it, though old Mab would box my ears for telling it at all.

Lessing's Fair pulled into Harrow Green the week before Michaelmas, with the carousel horses wrapped in sacking and the big wheel creaking like a bad knee. Sovereign was a wiry brown terrier who rode in the coconut shy's cash box and thought himself the owner of the whole show. Somebody had bent a tin crown to fit his collar, gilded on one side where the paint had run out, and he wore it like a bishop wears a mitre.

On the last night the frost came down hard. By morning the cash box was empty and the dog was gone. Mab walked the green in her man's coat with a lantern, calling his name, and where her boots broke the white she saw small prints beside her own. Four pads, a gap, four more. They went round the dead dodgems in a loop, looped again, and closed into the shape of a heart. Out the far side ran the trail, dotted and dashed, all the way to the lychgate of St Oswin's.

I won't tell you what she found under the yew, because she never told me and I wasn't there. But when she came back up the lane at noon, the crown was on the dog's collar and the dog was trotting at her heel with frost on his whiskers. Some say she took the crown back. Some say she gave it to him. I say a heart with a trail of paws running round it is a fine map home, and a fair that loses a dog once will never lose him twice.

Now, the lamps are low. Pull that blanket up.
