Pim had been sitting on the lamppost for three nights before the moon finally leaned down and asked what she wanted. Down on Arbour Lane nobody else was awake, only the bakery's cooling racks and a milk float ticking somewhere past the church. She hooked one paw round the iron and said the thing cats say when they have decided something: that she would stay up until somebody told her the time.

"It is always about twenty to four," the moon said, in the thin voice of a thing that has been up too long. "That is when the bakers start and I have to go."

Pim thought about this. She had a mistress on Ferris Road who fed her at six and forgot her at nine, and a basket under the stairs that smelled of old wool. She had never once been anywhere she was not expected back. "Then I will come up with you," she said, and she climbed the lamppost, which no cat is supposed to be able to do, and sat on the very top of it where the glass was warm.

The moon grinned, which it had never done before, and the lane went silver from end to end. Nobody on Arbour Lane ever saw the cat again after that, though the bakers swore they heard her purring above the rooftops at twenty to four, and every month the moon got a little thinner, as if it had lent out a piece of itself for a lap to sleep on.
