The ferryman's daughter kept three feathers in a tin by the door of the harbour cottage, and every spring she took them out to see if the gold had dulled. Her father had brought them back from the far skerries, where the gulls nested in such numbers that the rocks looked snowed upon. He said each feather had come from a different bird, and that the birds had been sisters who would not stop arguing over which of them flew highest.

When the autumn gales came up the channel that year, the tin went missing from its shelf. The girl searched the boathouse, the net loft and the crooked stairs to the lamp room. At last she found it in the hands of the drowned man's widow, who had come to the cottage asking for a boat to take her husband's body home across the bar. The widow held the tin out without a word, and her fingers were so cold the lid rattled.

The girl took one feather and pressed it into the widow's palm. Then she rowed her across the bar herself, the feather tucked inside the widow's collar, the two remaining feathers singing faintly against the tin in the bottom of the boat. On the far shore the widow looked back once and lifted her hand, and the gold caught the last of the light, flickering like something about to take off.

The girl kept the tin after that, but the shelf stayed empty, and every spring she went down to the harbour wall to watch the gulls wheel above the bar.
