Red feather illustration
Realism · Colour · Flash
A single feather is drawn upright and centred on a plain white background. Its vane is red with dark navy and white streaks, and a pale quill runs down the middle. Soft shading and fine strokes give the barbs a realistic, painted look.

The stationmaster at Harrowgate Junction kept a red feather in the drawer beneath his ticket punch, and nobody asked him why. Each winter a bird came down the line from the north, a small crimson-backed thing that perched on the signal gantry and would not be shooed. The porters said it was a robin that had got above itself. The old signalwoman, Mrs Pell, said it was a messenger, and that messengers were owed the courtesy of a platform.

One February the snow came early and the 4.10 was four hours late, and the bird dropped a single feather onto the wet boards by the milk churns. It was longer than a hand, red as a pillar box, streaked with navy and bone, and it did not blow away when the wind got up. The stationmaster picked it up and found the quill was warm. He put it in the drawer and forgot it until a stranger in a grey coat asked at the window for a ticket to the coast and a way to the sea.
He gave the stranger the feather with the ticket, and told him to lay it on the water at the far end of the pier. The stranger did not laugh. The train pulled out. In March a letter came to the station addressed to the bird, care of the gantry, and Mrs Pell read it aloud to the porters without being asked, because it was in her hand and she had written it herself twenty years before.
