Blue feather illustration
Realism · Colour · Flash
A single feather is drawn upright and slightly angled, with its quill running down the centre. The barbs are rendered with fine, directional strokes and soft shading, moving from deep ultramarine and black at the top to pale blue and grey-white at the base. The feather sits alone on a plain white background with a faint shadow, giving a clean, isolated composition.

Now don't you look at me like that, Eddie, I'm getting to the feather. Sit by the stove where the coal's still warm. Hattie Pryce kept the post office in Coldharbour then, the year they flooded the lower lanes for the reservoir, and she had a habit of reading the postcards before she sold the stamps. That's how she knew Mr Loveday from the mill was writing to a woman in Bristol.

The blue jay came down on the churchyard wall that October, and nobody in Coldharbour had ever seen a bird that colour. Its feathers were the blue of the ink in the ledger, deep as midnight at the crown and paling down the length until they went the grey of wet slate. Hattie picked one up off the stone and carried it into the shop like a letter with no address on it.
She slid it into the brass till drawer and forgot it, the way you forget a thing you mean to post. Three weeks on, Loveday came in with a face like a shut door and asked if there was any word of his sister's boy, the one who'd gone for a soldier. Hattie said no, and then she opened the drawer for a penny and there was the feather, bright as the day it fell. She understood it had been waiting for someone to ask the right question.
She wrote him a letter that night, in her own hand, and tucked the feather inside the fold. The boy's name was on the front in pencil, care of the Coldharbour post office. It came back to her in March, stamped Return to Sender, with the quill still bright and nothing else the worse for the journey.
