Three ink sketches of steaming cups

Black and grey · Flash

Three ink drawings of cups of differing heights, each with curling, spiral steam rising from the top. The linework is bold and fluid, with heavier strokes and dotted detailing on the outlines and handles. The drawings are black on white with no colour and a simple, open composition.

Dennis took his tea standing up, the way he took everything, and the first cup was always his. It was the squat one with the chipped lip, set down on the zinc counter at ten to four while the bakery ovens ticked behind us and the lorries idled outside the depot gates. He never thanked me. He just lifted it and let the steam curl up past his face as though it had somewhere better to be.

Shirley had the tall mug, the one with the painted handle that made her feel like a lady at a garden party. She lived in the flat above the bakery with her cat and her crossword, and she came down every morning in her dressing gown to collect it, which I took as a kindness and she took as her due. The middle cup belonged to whoever had the worst night, and for a long while that was me.

Last spring the third cup went out of the rotation. The widest one, with the hairline crack down its side, had been Tom's, and Tom had taken the early Hull run and never come back from it. Nobody said anything. I washed the cup, dried it and set it on the shelf with its handle turned to the wall, and for weeks the other two steamed away on the counter as if nothing had changed.

This morning I came down before the ovens and found the tall cup full. Shirley had filled it herself, lukewarm and sugared, and set it where Tom used to stand. The steam climbed off it in a slow spiral, looping twice over the rim before it thinned to nothing near the ceiling. I didn't touch it. I put the kettle on and watched the three of them go up together, one for Tom and two for the rest of us still here.
