Three purple tulips on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows three tulips on a shared stem, with two heads at the upper left and right and one in the centre, all shaded from pale lilac to deeper violet. Bold black outlines define the petals, and the grey-green leaves curve around the stems. The design is centred on the forearm and fills most of the frame against a plain skin background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Pieter had three weeks of the Rotterdam run left and nothing in the galley but tins of pilchards and a sack of onions gone soft at the ends. The bulbs were the captain's business, the manifest said, not the cook's, but the captain had been seasick since Hull and handed him the wooden crate with a look that meant keep them dry.

Pieter kept them dry. He wedged the crate behind the bread bin, away from the range, and each morning before the potatoes he lifted the sacking and checked the papery skins for rot. Three had already sent up green shoots, grey-green and folded like wet paper, reaching for a light the ship would not give them for another fortnight.

On the tenth morning the sea went flat and the engine stopped, and the whole crew drifted down to the galley because there was nothing else to do. Old Tam Birrell, who had not spoken to Pieter since the card game, leaned over the crate and said the bulbs were not for eating and never had been. Pieter said he knew that. He was already reaching for the shears.

He cut three stems from the tallest shoots and stood them in a jam jar of seawater, the only clean water he could spare. By evening the buds had loosened and split, violet at the tips and paling toward the stem, with leaves curling around them like a hand around a cup. Pieter carried the jar up to the wheelhouse at first light, when the captain was alone at the wheel. Neither of them mentioned the cargo again.
