Daisies and bee on a lower leg

Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows three daisies with white petals and yellow centres, joined by black stems with small leaves, with a yellow and black bee flying beside the top flower. The petals use grey shading and black outlines, while the bee and centres provide the main colour. The design sits diagonally across the skin, with the bee placed at the upper right to balance the flowers.

Dear Tom, the wind has got into the big top again, and the man who runs the generator swears it's the same wind that followed us out of Doncaster. I'm writing this on the back of a spare ticket roll because the caravan table wobbles and would make my handwriting look drunk.

You'll laugh, but I bought three daisies off a lad at the Thirsk stop for fifty pence, dug up with their roots still in a jam tin of muddy soil. He said they'd die by Wednesday. They haven't. They're on the windowsill next to the kettle, and they've grown a bit crooked, leaning toward the gap in the curtains like they want to see the coconut shy. Gary calls the bee Sergeant. It's been hanging round the lemonade stall for a fortnight, bumping into the cups, and the girls on the candyfloss van have started leaving it sugar on a saucer.

Last night we pulled onto the river field and I couldn't find Sergeant anywhere. This morning he was on the caravan step, very slow, legs folded under him like he'd been carrying something too heavy. I sat on the step beside him and waited with my cardigan pulled over my knees until the sun reached the concrete. Then he lifted off and went straight across the field toward the hedge, just as the first punters started shouting for their tea.

I've pressed one of the daisies flat between two pages of the Radio Times and put it in your birthday card. Don't make a face when you open it. It's the only thing on this whole site that didn't cost me a pound. Write back, and tell Mum I'm eating properly, even if the evidence is a bag of chips.

Love, Nell
