Purple peony on the shoulder
Japanese · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A large purple peony bloom fills the frame, with layered petals in lilac and deeper violet and a cluster of yellow stamens at the centre. Teal leaves and a small blue bud surround the flower, and black outlines define the petals with soft shading inside them. The tattoo sits on a shoulder and upper arm, photographed at an angle against a dark top.

The old gardener at Luoyang tells you the peonies must be divided before the first frost, or they will sulk for three springs and bloom like cabbages. You kneel in the wet bed with a bronze spade that belongs to the house and work it under the root clump, careful of the pale fibres. The violet ones are the stubborn ones. Every other colour gives up its roots easily, but the purple bloom by the bamboo lattice has grown so thick that the earth clings to it like a fist.

You cut it anyway, because the master has said so, and because a magistrate's wife has sent a letter asking for one purple peony for her courtyard before the new moon. Her servant arrives at dusk with a lacquered box lined in silk, and she watches you wrap the division in damp moss with the patience of someone who has been told the price. She asks whether the flower will still open in her city. You tell her the truth, which is that nobody knows what a peony wants until it has been moved twice.
She pays in copper and you pocket it without counting. Through the autumn you think about the cut root in its box, the way the jade-green leaves folded shut against the cold. Next spring you walk past the magistrate's gate on the way to the market and see, above the wall, a single bloom the colour of a river at evening, its gold stamens spilling outward like dust from a broken seal. Nobody in the courtyard has thought to tell the root that it was ever moved.
