Three roses with buds and leaves
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows three open roses of different sizes, with two closed rosebuds on the upper left and several pointed leaves framing the group. Clean, even black outlines define the petals, with fine interior lines suggesting folds and curls, and light hatching on the leaves. The design is in black on a white background, with a loose, scattered wash of thin lines behind the bouquet.

You are late with the order again, and Mrs Tregenna is already shouting from the top of the slipway about the tide. The van smells of diesel and wet cardboard. On the passenger seat sit three roses in brown paper, the big ones opened out like cupped hands, and two buds still shut tight at the top of the bunch because the nursery in Penzance packed them that way. You tuck the leaves back in as you climb out, pointed and dark, and carry the bundle down the steps past the chandlery.

The lifeboat crew are going out at six for a boat that has missed its mooring at Newlyn, and half the harbour is standing about in oilskins. Mrs Tregenna takes the flowers without looking at you. She counts them the way she counts the crab pots, one, two, three, then the buds, then the green at the edge. "Ned liked the green," she says. "Said it looked like something that would keep." She tucks the bouquet under one arm and goes back up the wall.
You stay on the wall with nothing to do but watch the boat slide past the breakwater, its engine loud, then small. The gulls go after a split crab on the slip. The wind swings round to the west and the paper on the empty wrapping crackles. You fold the van receipt into a boat shape because your hands need something, and you do not think about the men out there, which is harder than it sounds.
At noon the boat comes back in on the flood with its wake white behind it, and the harbour fills with people who have no more to say. Mrs Tregenna is still on the wall. The bouquet sits on the stone beside her where she set it down, and one of the buds has loosened into an open cup while nobody was looking. You go to take the empty crates back to the van, and she lifts her hand to stop you, so you leave the flowers where they are.
