The snow shut the Hollin road on the Tuesday, and by Thursday there were four of us in the back room of the Fleece at Garrowby Top who had no business being stuck together: Mrs Teague, who kept the books, her nephew Danny, a travelling dentist called Mr Oake, and me, Nell, who pulled the pints and was supposed to be minding the fire.

The three men came in off the moor on the Wednesday night with a damp canvas holdall and snow in their collars. Oake kept his eyes on the carpet. Danny wound his scarf up over his mouth every time someone spoke, and Mrs Teague pressed her palms to her ears whenever the wireless crackled. Nobody mentioned the holdall. Nobody asked why it was so heavy, or why it clinked when Danny set it under the stairs. I only found out what was in it when I counted the till on Thursday and came up short by exactly the price of a brass carriage clock that had sat on the bar since my grandfather's time.

I could have gone to the constable at the bottom of the valley. I had the words ready, and the road was still shut, so he could not have come up even if I had. Instead I went down to the cellar with a torch and found the clock wrapped in a tea towel behind the barrels, its hands stopped at a quarter past nine.

On Friday the plough came through. I carried the clock back up and set it on the mantelpiece, wound it, and let it tick. When the three of them came down for breakfast, they took their seats without a word, and I poured their tea without one either.
