Skull with flames and crossed revolvers
Black and grey · Flash
A solid black skull with a snarling expression sits at the centre of the design, with two revolvers crossed behind its lower jaw and their grips extending to either side. Tall, stylised flames in solid black rise from the top of the skull and frame the figure. The image is a high-contrast black and white illustration with clean, bold outlines and no shading gradients.

The bonnet was the last thing Ray had to finish, and Dot Pruett wanted the flames up to the windscreen. "Proper ones, Ray, climbing like they're late for something." He stood in the yard behind the Crown at Lydd with a rag in one fist and a tin of black gloss balanced on the wing of the Humber, watching the clock over the coach house door creep towards eleven.

The skull had been his idea, sketched on the back of a parts invoice. Two revolvers crossed beneath its jaw, grips flung out either side like bunting. Dot's late father had been a bailiff with a temper and a soft spot for old westerns, and he'd once told Ray that any man who wanted his daughter would need a steady hand and a straight line. Ray had taken it as a threat. Now he suspected it had been a test, and that he was, at least, passing it with paint on his cuffs.
At twenty past, the gate creaked and Dot came up the lane on foot, veil in one hand, shoes in the other, the hem of her dress grey with road dust. She'd had a puncture out past Dungeness and changed the wheel herself in the wind, with her cousin holding the torch the wrong way round. "Don't say anything," she told him. He didn't. He untied the ribbon from the door handle and held it out.
The gloss was still tacky at the tips of the flames. When she slid into the passenger seat the sun broke over the marsh and lit the black paint so the skull seemed to grin at both of them at once, and Ray thought the old bailiff would have approved of the timing, if nothing else.
