Skull wearing a cowboy hat
Black and grey · Flash
A skull in three-quarter view wears a wide-brimmed cowboy hat that tilts down over its eye sockets. The design uses bold black outlines, solid black areas on the hat and shadowed sections, and fine hatching on the teeth and cheekbone. It is shown in black ink on a white background with no body placement visible.

Nobody in Gallow Creek would touch the hat after the spring floods, so Ada Pruitt carried it down from the fence post at Lowry's crossing herself, using a fork and a feed sack. It was a wide grey thing, stiff with alkali, and it sat level on the post as if someone had set it down to rest. Under the brim, in the shadow the felt made, was a face the sun and the coyotes had long since worked over, and it was grinning.

Lowry had ridden out with the mail in October and never come back. The sheriff's men found his horse grazing at the ford with the saddle empty, and a bootprint going into the river that did not come out the far side. Folks said the river kept what it wanted. Ada said the river had no use for a hat, and she hung it on the back of her kitchen door for a week, until the night its brim began to creak in the draught, tipping lower over the empty eyes, as though it were trying to see something across the room.
She went out to the ford at dawn with the sack. Under the cottonwoods she found a second bootprint, older, pressed into mud that had dried hard as slate, and beside it a tin cup with a name scratched on the handle. Lowry had been looking for his brother, who had gone under the same water ten years before. The cup was full of rain. Ada tipped it out on the grass and laid the hat beside it, crown down, the way you lay a man to rest.
When she climbed back up the bank the hat had left the sack and was sitting, brim level, on the fence post again. Ada left it there. Some things in Gallow Creek are better for being watched from the porch.
