Three snowflakes on the inner wrist
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows three black snowflake tattoos of differing sizes on the inner wrist and forearm, with the hand resting against the chin and only the lower face visible. The snowflakes are drawn in dark, crisp linework with symmetrical arms and small details, and they are rendered in solid black ink with no colour. The soft, pale background and natural light keep the focus on the tattoos at the lower left of the frame.

The canvas has been sagging since Tuesday, and by Thursday the snow has found every patch on the big top, so you climb the ladder with a bucket of sand and a broom to knock it off before the roof gives. Below, Mr Ansel Dray is counting the seats for the last matinee, tapping each one with his cane as if it might be sold from under him.

There are eleven people left in the company and four of them are over seventy. The lion went to a sanctuary in Wales in October. The little girl who folds paper for the pie-sellers, Nell, sits on the trapeze bar with a sheet of tracing paper and asks you to make her a snowflake, the proper kind, six arms, no two alike. You fold it four times, snip with the good scissors, and open it on her knee. It has a hole in the centre like a star someone forgot to finish.
Nobody comes to the matinee. Dray plays the same waltz on the wheezing organ for forty minutes while you stand at the back of the empty stands. Then the wind lifts the canvas flap and snow drifts in across the sawdust in a slow spiral, settling on the bare ring.
Afterwards you go round the wagons pinning Nell's snowflakes to each window, small ones first and then larger, the way the winters went. When you finish, the lamp is lit in the last caravan and the glass glows from behind, and three flakes hold their shape on the frost, each one different, each one still standing.
