Dandelion with drifting seeds on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black dandelion sits on the inner wrist, with a seed head and delicate stem and loose seeds drifting off to the left. The linework is thin and the seeds are drawn as fine strokes and dots, with light soft shading on the seed head. The image is almost entirely monochrome apart from the woman's pink lips at the top of the frame, and the tattoo is placed centrally against the skin with a dark jacket and zip at the lower right.

Dear Margit,

The snow has shut the pass since Tuesday, so the coach has not come and the innkeeper says it will not come until the thaw. There are eleven of us in a house built for twenty, and I have taken the room under the eaves because it keeps the draught off my chest. You will laugh that I write to you at all when you could shout at me across your kitchen table, but paper is the only thing up here that does not freeze.
Yesterday the boy who fetches water found a dandelion clock pushed up through the drift beside the stable door. Its head was still whole, which in February I would not have believed possible. He carried it in on his palm like a lantern. Herr Bruckner leaned over it to make a wish, and the seeds lifted off all at once, across the flagstones, into the stew, up the stairwell, and one caught on my cuff and stayed there, pale as a fishbone.
I have been thinking about where the others went. Some will be under the snow now, waiting, and some will have blown clean over the ridge towards the valley. The rest of the afternoon I watched the window, where the wind keeps pushing fine grey flakes sideways past the glass, and I could not tell which were snow and which were seed.
I am sending you the one from my cuff, folded in this letter. Plant it on the south wall where the sun lingers, and when the pass opens, tell me if anything comes up.
