The mackerel were late that August, and Harry Lusk swore at the sky for it while he bailed the Marian Rose with a bent coffee tin. Fourteen years he had fished out of Porthkerris and never once had the sea made him wait for its fish. Sixteen-year-old Nell Trewin sat in the stern with a torch in her teeth, watching the cloud bank come in low over Gull Rock.

She had found the cross that morning, pressed into the wet sand at the far end of the cove where the tide had left the old wreck timbers. It was no bigger than a man's palm, cast in black iron, one arm worn smooth where something had rubbed against it for a century. Nell had carried it up the cliff path in her pocket and kept her thumb on it all day, which was how Harry knew she had a secret before she told him.

"Chapel people lost a boat off that rock in 1887," he said, when she finally set it on the thwart between them. "Four men. Their wives buried a cross like that in the sand because the parish wouldn't take the bodies. Put it back."

She didn't. Instead she held it up against the grey light and laughed, because the sun had cracked through the cloud and laid a thin gold bar across the water, and the cross threw its shadow exactly onto the rock they were rowing toward. Harry stopped bailing. For the first time all summer the mackerel showed silver under the hull, thick as a fistful of coins, and he gave up pretending he didn't feel the luck in it.

They came home at dusk with the boat sitting low and heavy. Harry nailed the iron cross above the wheelhouse door, where it still hangs, and he swears the sea has behaved ever since.
