A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Three sisters once lived above the chip shop on Marrow Lane, and their mother kept a rule that every visitor had to climb the stairs past three hooks on the wall. On the first hook hung a looking glass, on the second a gramophone horn, and on the third a cracked tea caddy full of buttons. Nobody asked why. You simply learned to keep your face still when you walked by.

One February a travelling tailor came up those stairs with a coat over his arm and a debt he could not pay. Beauty, the eldest, took one look at him in the glass and covered her eyes with her bony hands, because she had seen what he would do to the Hollis girl down at the pier if he got the chance. Truth, the middle sister, cupped her ears and would not hear a word of his excuses, which was a kindness, since his excuses were mostly lies. Love, the youngest, pressed her fingers to her mouth, because she loved the tailor's little dog and could not bear to say what she knew about it.

The tailor left by the back stairs before the tide turned, and he never came back to Marrow Lane. People said the sisters had been cruel to refuse him, and the sisters let them say it. Years later the Hollis girl married a fisherman and named her first daughter Truth, though nobody in the town could say whether she meant the word or the sister.

The hooks are still on the wall. The caddy is still full of buttons.
