Sugar skull woman with lily, line drawing
Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a woman's face styled as a sugar skull, with closed eyes, decorated cheeks, a diamond motif on the forehead and a open-mouthed smile with teeth. A large lily sits in long, wavy hair that swirls around the face and curls out at the edges. The work is made of uniform dark bold outlines and fine interior detail on a white background, with no shading or colour.

Ask any shepherd on the Harrow Fells and he will tell you the lady of Greyholt Keep walks the old road on the night the year turns. She comes down with her face painted white and gold, and her hair full of lilies, for she was a bride once and never left off the wedding.

The lord of the keep had promised her to the tithe-wardens to settle a debt of salt and grain. Her name was Wenna Marr, a baker's girl, and she was the only one in the valley who could count past a hundred without a stone. On the night of the wedding she sat at the long table among the empty chairs and counted every guest, living and dead, until the candles guttered. Each name she spoke cost the lord a year of his life.
When the wardens came to take her, she laid a white lily on the stone and pressed a cut diamond into the wax of her brow, so that nobody would see her mouth had gone still. They walled her into the chapel. Ever since, a grey wind has come up the valley on the night of the turning, and in the morning there is a bright stone lying in the dust of the nave.
Every spring the lilies push up through the flagstones of the chapel, though no one has planted a bulb there in living memory. The children who dare the broken gate say the lady is still counting, and that she has reached the last name in the village and is climbing the hill to finish the lord.
