Thin dashed line tattoos on two forearms
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two arms are shown in soft, bright light, one above the other, each with a single thin dashed black line running around the forearm near the wrist. The linework is very fine and broken into short segments, with no shading or colour. The bright, blurred background and shallow focus keep attention on the skin and the delicate lines.

The perforation machine at Lowther Street jammed twice before the Friday post, and Nell Garside had to feed the reels through by hand while Dennis Harbottle swore at the rollers and blamed the damp. Nell didn't mind. Her fingers knew the work better than the machine did. She ran a steel rule along each sheet and marked the dashes in grey pencil, four millimetres apart, so the clerks in the back room could tear a stamp cleanly from its neighbour without a ragged edge. Dennis said nobody would notice a crooked line. Nell said the Queen would notice, and he laughed, because the Queen had not been on a stamp in Lowther Street for years.

The letter from the Board came on a Tuesday, folded in three. The sorting floor would move to Leeds by spring, and the perforating would go with it, along with the men who'd kept it running since the war. Nell read it twice standing by the window, then went back to the bench and finished the reel she had started. She did not hurry the dashes. Each one was a small decision about where a thing should part and where it should hold.
On her last shift she took the final sheet from the machine, laid it flat, and drew one unbroken line across the top margin with the rule. Then she tore a strip along the dashes, neat as a ticket from a train that had already gone, and folded it into her coat pocket. Outside, the light was going orange over the goods yard, and the first porter was wheeling a trolley towards the gate. Nell buttoned her coat, felt the paper stiff against her wrist, and walked out without looking back at the machine.
