Small feather tattoo on the side ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A single small feather is tattooed on bare skin, drawn with a dark outline and shaded in black and grey to show the barbs and central quill. The feather sits diagonally and is set against soft, pale skin tones and a plain light background. The photograph is shot close up with the raised arm framing the tattoo on the right.

The tin of unclaimed things had sat on the top shelf of the lost property office at Kirkby Lowe since before Ada started, and in eleven years she had never opened it. Brollies, a child's wellington, a glove with its thumb unpicked, a phone charger no one would ever come back for. Mostly she logged them, sealed them in bags with dates on, and let them wait.

On a wet Thursday in March a man came to the hatch asking after a notebook. Dark coat, a ticket folded into quarters in his fist. He described it closely: green cover, a pencil through the spine, and a single black feather pressed between the last two pages. It was his daughter's, he said, and she had been keeping it since the Tuesday she was born. Ada told him she had no notebook. He nodded as if he had expected that, and said the feather would turn up, things like that always did.

After he left she went to the shelf for no reason she could name. The tin had been moved to the front. Inside, beneath a bus pass, lay a feather, black and fine, its quill still straight. She was sure she had not put it there, and sure too that she had never seen a feather that dark on a Kirkby Lowe platform.

She carried it out to platform four just as the 16:40 began to pull away. The wind from the carriages caught it, lifted it, turned it once over the wet tarmac, and then let it go down the line after the train, the way the railway lets go of everything it is given.
