Shaded flowers and swirls across a back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large tattoo covers the back from the nape of the neck down towards the waist, showing shaded flower petals and leaves joined by sweeping swirl-like scrollwork. The shading uses smooth grey gradients and strong contrast to give the petals and curls a three-dimensional, sculpted appearance. The design is composed as a vertical flow that follows the spine, with the lighter petals framed by darker ribbon-like lines against a dark background.

Dear Nell, The cornice in the Customs House came down on Tuesday, all of it, in one long grey curl like a wave that had thought better of breaking. Mr Pascoe says the lilies underneath were carved by a man called Eli Tregear in 1861, and he never once signed his name. We found his mould in the loft, wrapped in sacking and smelling of linseed.

I spent three evenings pressing fresh plaster into it, working by a paraffin lamp because the wiring in that wing is older than both of us. The petals were the hardest. They curl back on themselves so the light has to fall into the hollow and stop there. Pascoe showed me how to keep the edge soft with a wet thumb and no more than a breath of pressure, or the whole bloom goes flat like a pressed flower in a Bible.
On the Thursday the harbour fog came in thick and the foghorn on the breakwater started up. I was alone at the ladder when I noticed the ribbon scroll had a split in it, a hairline run the length of a finger. Tregear must have left it deliberately, or his hand slipped and he decided to keep the slip. I thought about leaving it. Instead I cut a fresh edge and let the crack stay part of the stone.
Pascoe came back at six, looked up for a long time, and said nothing except that it would dry pale and he'd want it painted by Friday. I told him it would look better grey, the way it must have been when the gas lamps were new. He laughed and said I had been listening to the wrong men. Write soon, and tell Mam the gulls have finally left the chimney alone.
